Course Description
Our Relational Level training serves as the foundation for all other programs within The Mandt System. As a cornerstone in promoting workplace safety, fostering healthy relationships is at the heart of our instruction program. We are dedicated to equipping your staff with the tools to cultivate a workplace that not only ensures their physical safety but also promotes psychological, social, and emotional well-being.
Our program is designed to empower your team to effectively meet the needs of individuals served and achieve organizational goals. The Relational level emphasizes the pivotal role of personal relationships in creating a secure and thriving workplace environment and how security in these relationships will create better opportunities for your team to serve your clients. Certification in the relational chapters is a prerequisite for individuals seeking certification in the conceptual, technical, and advanced programs.
Chapter 1 – Primary Prevention: Building & Maintaining Healthy Relationships
Participants will learn the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect and understand how relationship-building is a critical aspect of their work. They will explore the characteristics of healthy relationships and discuss Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as a framework for understanding behavior as a strategy for addressing unmet needs. This chapter also covers effective interpersonal communication skills, the basic differences between emotion and behavior, and how cultural diversity can influence relationships. Additionally, participants will learn to apply a situational awareness and tactical decision-making model to select the most appropriate interactions or interventions to meet the needs of others.
Chapter 2 – De-Escalation Skills: Self-Regulation & Co-Regulation
In this chapter, participants will learn the importance of effective self-regulation skills and how to demonstrate four key tools: affect labeling, regulated breathing, body scanning, and using the senses for grounding. Chapter 2 also covers how early-life trauma impacts development and how to apply the phases of the Mandt System® Crisis Cycle to real-life crisis situations. Participants will practice effective skills for each phase of the Crisis Cycle and recognize the significance of teamwork. Additionally, participants review the importance of processing their emotions and experiences as a critical step in building relationships and preventing future crises.
The Conceptual Library will be included with each instructor certification. This resource will include:
- Trauma-Informed Services – to help staff better work with people who have experienced trauma
- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports – supporting people, not just their behaviors

We do not require any prior training for staff and instructor certification in the Mandt Relational chapters. After completing this course, instructors are certified for two years, and staff are certified for one year.
Instructors who are new to the course will attend training for two days. Those recertifying will attend for one day.
Certification in the relational level chapters is required every two years for instructors and every year at the student level.
All Mandt chapters that do not include curriculum on physical skills have a 1:20 instructor-to-student ratio.
We provide CEUs for all instructor courses. We facilitate these certifications through IACET and calculate at 1 CEU per every 10 hours of course time. It is important to note that CEUs are not available at the student level for these courses.
Certified Mandt instructors must teach the relational chapters and be on a course report at least once a year.
